Delhi Capitals suffered their first defeat of the season on Sunday night as Mumbai Indians held their nerve in the final overs at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. Despite a promising run-chase, the Capitals crumbled under pressure in the dying moments, with Mumbai sealing the win after forcing a late collapse. Delhi’s tail panicked, leading to three run-outs in the penultimate over, giving Mumbai a 12-run victory with an over to spare.

Chasing a target of 206, Delhi looked in control with Karun Nair and Abishek Porel at the crease. Nair, making his season debut in the XI, smashed a blistering 89 off 40 balls, building a crucial 119-run partnership with Porel (33). However, Karn Sharma’s spin magic turned the game in Mumbai’s favor, picking up quick wickets of Porel, KL Rahul (15), and Tristan Stubbs (1).

Post-match, commentator Murali Karthik asked DC skipper Axar Patel about his thoughts on the disappointing result, asking, “Aapke hisaab se match kaha pe gaya (according to you, where did the match go)?” With a big smile, Axar replied to Karthik’s remark that “disappointment is visible on his face,” saying with a hint of sarcasm, “Mumbai ke paas (went towards Mumbai).”

Delhi Capitals skipper Axar Patel attributed the loss to “soft dismissals” in the middle order but chose not to dwell on the result. Reflecting on where Delhi lost their way in the chase, Axar explained, “We had the game in the bag, but some soft dismissals and bad shots in the middle order shifted the momentum in Mumbai’s favor.” He stressed that relying on the lower-order batters wasn’t always a solution, adding, “You can’t leave it to the batters in the lower order every time. Don’t need to overthink, just one of those days. I was happy at the halfway stage.”

“Kuldeep is bowling unbelievably this season”

Axar Patel also pointed to sloppy fielding as a factor that allowed Mumbai Indians to surpass the 200-run mark but praised his spin department for their contribution. “Maybe if we had caught better, we could’ve kept them to a lower score,” he remarked. On a positive note, Axar expressed confidence in his spin unit, saying, “I get confidence in bowling all three of our spinners, and two of the three can also bowl in the powerplay. Kuldeep is bowling unbelievably this season. Whenever I need a wicket, I can go to him.” Despite the loss, Axar focused on the positives and concluded, “There were a lot of positives today — we just need to forget about this game.”
