“‘Kya faltu batting ki humne’: Ajinkya Rahane to Shreyas Iyer During Post-Match Handshake After KKR’s Loss to PBKS”

It was hard to gauge what Ajinkya Rahane was feeling, but his words to Shreyas Iyer, accompanied by a big smile, spoke volumes.

Heartbreak for Ajinkya Rahane, Jubilation for Iyer as PBKS Defend Historic Total

Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane couldn’t hide his disappointment after Kolkata Knight Riders’ dramatic collapse against Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 match on April 15. As captain, such defeats are especially tough, particularly when the game seemed under control until a crucial judgment error shifted momentum. On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer, Rahane’s close friend and Mumbai teammate, was overwhelmed with emotions. Despite being out of breath, Iyer couldn’t help but scream with joy, encapsulating the unpredictable beauty of cricket and the IPL.

The match was a thrilling rollercoaster. Chasing a modest 112, KKR were cruising at 62/3 in 7.3 overs when Ajinkya Rahane dismissal turned the tide. Yuzvendra Chahal, Punjab’s leg-spinner, delivered a googly that Rahane attempted to sweep, missing it completely. The ball struck him in front, and after a brief chat with partner Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Rahane decided to walk off without reviewing, a decision that would later haunt him.

Replays revealed that Ajinkya Rahane would have survived, as the ball’s impact was outside the off-stump. His departure proved to be the catalyst for KKR’s downfall, losing their next five wickets for just 17 runs, ending up at 79/8. Chahal’s brilliant 4/12 was instrumental in their collapse.

Andre Russell briefly ignited hope with some late power hitting, but Punjab Kings’ pacers Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen wrapped up the tail, bowling KKR out for 95. PBKS defended the lowest total ever in IPL history to win by 16 runs, leaving Rahane and KKR with much to ponder.

Ajinkya Rahane’s chat with Shreyas Iyer after the match

After Punjab Kings celebrated their improbable victory, the KKR players lined up for the customary post-match handshake. Rahane, leading his team, found himself face-to-face with Punjab’s captain, Shreyas Iyer. Despite the sting of defeat, Rahane greeted Iyer with a broad smile and made an honest, lighthearted remark in Mumbaiya Hindi: “Kya faltu batting kari humne,” (What a disastrous batting effort from us). His words, followed by a handshake and a hug, spoke volumes about the camaraderie and sportsmanship that define the IPL, even in the face of such a crushing loss.

Speaking after the match, a disappointed Ajinkya Rahane didn’t mince words. “Nothing to explain, we all saw what happened there. Pretty disappointed with the effort,” he admitted. Reflecting on his own dismissal, Rahane took full responsibility, saying, “I will take the blame (for my dismissal), played the wrong shot, although it was missing.” He also clarified the decision not to review the LBW call, explaining, “He (Angkrish Raghuvanshi) was not very sure after being given out. He said it could be the umpire’s call. I did not want to take a chance at that time, I was not sure as well. That was the discussion.”

Rahane was quick to shift the focus to the team’s collective performance. “We batted really badly as a unit, we take full responsibility. Bowlers did really well on this surface, restricting a strong Punjab lineup to 111,” he said. Despite the setback, Rahane stressed the importance of maintaining a positive mindset. “As an individual, you still have to be confident and positive. On this wicket, batting with a full face was better. The sweep was hard to play. We were reckless and should take full responsibility.”

With the defeat still fresh, Rahane emphasized the need for calm and reflection moving forward. “When I go upstairs, need to keep myself calm and then think about what to say to the boys. Still have to be positive. Half of the tournament is still remaining. Have to address this and move forward,” he concluded.
