Why Mumbai Indians’ Ryan Rickelton Was Recalled After Being Caught: The Explanation Behind Klaasen’s Wicketkeeping Blunder

IPL 2025, MI vs SRH: Why Ryan Rickelton Was Recalled After Being Caught – Heinrich Klaasen’s Blunder Explained

Ryan Rickelton’s Second Chance After Klaasen’s Blunder Helps MI Secure Win Against SRH

Ryan Rickelton

Mumbai Indians registered their second consecutive win in IPL 2025, defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad by four wickets at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. However, the outcome of the match could have been drastically different had MI’s opening batter Ryan Rickelton been sent back to the pavilion in the seventh over.

In a bizarre incident during the over, bowled by Zeeshan Ansari, Rickelton appeared to be caught by Pat Cummins at cover. As Rickelton made his way to the boundary, Suryakumar Yadav prepared to enter the middle. However, the fourth umpire rushed out to stop Yadav before he could reach the stairs leading to the dressing room. It was later revealed that third umpire was reviewing the position of wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen’s gloves.

It turned out that Klaasen’s gloves were ahead of the stumps when Zeeshan bowled, violating MCC’s law 27.3.1. As per the rule, the wicketkeeper must remain wholly behind the wicket until the ball either touches the bat or person of the striker or passes the striker’s wicket. The decision was reversed after the television cameras confirmed Klaasen’s error, giving Rickelton a second chance. This crucial moment played a part in MI’s eventual victory.

Mumbai Indians chase 163 comfortably

Mumbai Indians, led by Hardik Pandya, won the toss and opted to bowl first against SunRisers Hyderabad. SRH posted a total of 162/5 in their 20 overs, with Abhishek Sharma top-scoring with 40 runs. Aniket Verma’s quick-fire 18 off 8 balls helped SRH surpass the 160-run mark.

In reply, MI chased down the target comfortably with four wickets in hand and 11 balls to spare. Will Jacks was the top scorer for MI with 36 runs off 26 balls, while Ryan Rickelton contributed 31 runs off 23 balls. Rohit Sharma (26), Suryakumar Yadav (26), Tilak Varma (21), and Hardik Pandya (21) also played crucial roles in the successful chase.

With this win, Mumbai Indians remain in seventh place in the points table, while SunRisers Hyderabad continue to struggle, sitting at ninth.
